You may know that as part of a new expansion of its restrictive research program, Instagram wants to allow researchers to conduct an in-depth study of the platform’s effects on young users, following years of allegations about Instagram’s effect on teens and its denials by Meta.
According to The Atlantic, Meta is preparing “a small pilot program” to give academics access to Instagram usage data to investigate the impact of the app’s use on teens. According to The Atlantic:
“The business has declared that it will consider seven proposals that center on particular fields of study (e.g., examining whether social media use is linked to distinct outcomes in various regions of the world). The report claims that Meta will continue restricting access to specific data, such as post-specific information and user demographic data. However, the idea (at least in theory) is that Meta will expand its insights into Instagram usage, which will validate or disprove the notion that Instagram is harmful to teens.
This comes three years after a groundbreaking report by The Wall Street Journal based on leaked documents from Meta revealed that the company had conducted internal research that suggested Instagram is particularly harmful to teen girls. Still, it chose to ignore the results to encourage increased use. Congress eventually called Meta to account for its efforts following the publication of that report.
In response, Meta denied the WSJ’s findings and the report’s validity, saying that the study was only a small-scale effort to help guide product decisions. Meta stressed that it does not represent broader impacts.
However, several other studies have also found that Instagram can have harmful effects on teens, with bullying and unfavorable comparisons being the main issues cited by mental health experts.
We hope these new research projects will help uncover the truth and then help Meta better coordinate its policies to provide more protection to teens. The platform is constantly adding new tools to make this more accessible. Hopefully, as more data becomes available, it will give better solutions to protect young users from harm.
The Center for Open Science will oversee the Instagram study, ensuring that Meta is not directly responsible for publishing the results.
Once again, Meta has restricted access to its data since the Cambridge Analytica incident, but perhaps this is a new direction for the business.
